Frequently Asked Questions
Mobility Rebate Programs
What is a mobility rebate?
A mobility rebate is a financial incentive offered by a vehicle manufacturer to help offset the cost of installing adaptive equipment in a vehicle. This rebate makes it more affordable for individuals with disabilities to modify their vehicles for greater safety, comfort, and accessibility.
Adaptive equipment includes modifications that enable a person with a disability to operate or travel in a vehicle safely. Common examples of adaptive equipment include:
- Wheelchair accessible van conversions
- Wheelchair lifts
- Mobility scooter stowage lifts
- Hand controls
- Specialized seating
Mobility rebates are typically provided as a cash reimbursement after purchasing or leasing a new vehicle. The reimbursement amount varies based on the type and cost of the installed adaptive equipment. By offering financial assistance, manufacturers make it easier for individuals with disabilities to purchase and customize vehicles to meet their specific mobility needs.
Are pre-owned vehicles eligible for mobility rebates?
In most cases, pre-owned vehicles are not eligible for manufacturer mobility rebates. However, there are some exceptions.
Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) vehicles from manufacturers like Audi, BMW, MINI, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen may qualify for their respective mobility rebate programs. Always review your automaker's requirements before purchasing a CPO vehicle if you plan to apply for a mobility rebate.
Are leased vehicles eligible for mobility rebates?
Yes, most vehicle manufacturers offer mobility rebates for new vehicles leased through their authorized programs. Adaptive equipment installed on leased vehicles is typically eligible for reimbursement, although some manufacturers require advance written approval from the leasing company before installation.
Note: New vehicles leased from Mazda are not eligible for Mazda’s mobility rebate program.
Are there time limits for applying for a mobility rebate reimbursement?
Yes, there are time limits for submitting your mobility rebate reimbursement application. Application deadlines vary by manufacturer but typically range from 90 days to 12 months after the vehicle delivery date.
To ensure you qualify for your mobility rebate, check your automaker’s specific deadline. You can find detailed information in our Mobility Rebate Guide.
