Grant & Funding Assistance for Disabled Veterans

You served for us. Now it’s our turn. The VA has several programs to fund wheelchair accessible vehicles for disabled veterans, including veterans with ALS. For veterans with disabilities who do not qualify for VA funding, there are also nonprofit organizations and private foundations that may be able to provide assistance. And we’ve done the research on these programs so you don’t have to. Because we have been helping veterans in our community purchase wheelchair accessible vehicles for over 40 years, our mobility consultants will be able to help you navigate through the process of utilizing these VA benefits or other resources and select the wheelchair accessible vehicle and adaptive equipment that is the perfect fit for your mobility needs.
In addition to our extensive knowledge on wheelchair van grants and funding programs for disabled veterans, The Creative Mobility Group has also teamed up with wheelchair van finance experts to be able to offer the best financing options to make purchasing an accessible van as affordable as possible for veterans. You may also consider trading in your current vehicle toward the purchase of a wheelchair accessible van. We accept trade-ins of both wheelchair accessible vehicles and unconverted vehicles. To get started or for more information, speak with a mobility consultant at your nearest Creative Mobility Group dealership.

VA Grants for Wheelchair Vans for Disabled Veterans
VA Automobile Allowance (Automobile Grant)
The VA Automobile Allowance, also known as the Automobile Grant, is a benefit provided by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for eligible veterans with certain service-connected disabilities. The grant provides a one-time payment of up to $26,417.20 to assist in purchasing a vehicle that can be adapted for accessibility.

Eligible Service-Connected Conditions
- Loss, or permanent loss of use, of one or both feet
- Loss, or permanent loss of use, of one or both hands
- Permanent decreased vision in both eyes
- Severe burn injuries
- Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
- Ankylosis in one or both knees or hips
Recent Program Updates
- Starting in 2032, eligible veterans may receive the grant once every 10 years instead of once in a lifetime.
- Veterans who received the grant over 30 years ago are now eligible to apply again.
VA Automobile Adaptive Equipment (AAE) Program
The VA Automobile Adaptive Equipment (AAE) Program offers additional funding to veterans who qualify for the VA Automobile Allowance. This program covers the cost of adaptive equipment and vehicle modifications necessary for a veteran to safely drive or access their vehicle.
Covered Adaptive Equipment Includes
- Side-entry or rear-entry wheelchair van conversions
- Platform lifts and under-vehicle lifts (UVLs)
- Hand controls, left-foot accelerators, and steering/braking assist systems
- Raised doors, raised roofs, and wheelchair tie-downs
- Driver transfer seats (for eligible service-connected veterans)
Ingress/Egress Modifications for Non-Service-Connected Veterans
Certain vehicle modifications — such as van lifts, raised doors or roofs, air conditioning, and wheelchair tie-downs for passengers — are now considered “medical services” when deemed medically necessary. As a result, some non-service-connected veterans may be eligible for these modifications. However, they are not eligible for equipment enabling them to drive, such as hand controls or transfer seats.
Driver Rehabilitation Requirement
Before receiving any adaptive driving equipment or vehicle accessibility modifications through the VA Automobile Adaptive Equipment Program, veterans must complete an evaluation through the VA Driver Rehabilitation Program. Even if the veteran is not the driver, a driver rehabilitation specialist must assess the need for vehicle ingress and egress modifications (such as lifts or ramps). To qualify for VA funding, all vehicle modifications must be medically prescribed by an approved VA driver rehabilitation specialist.

Assistance for Disabled Veterans
Ask VA
Ask VA is an online service provided by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) that allows veterans, their families, caregivers, and survivors to ask questions and receive answers about VA benefits, services, and resources.
Through Ask VA, users can submit their questions online and receive a response from a VA representative via email or telephone within a specified timeframe. This service is designed to provide veterans with a convenient and efficient way to access information about their benefits and services, as well as to help them navigate the complex VA system.
In addition to Ask VA, the VA offers a range of other resources and services for veterans, including healthcare, education and training, disability compensation, pension benefits, and more. These services are designed to support veterans and their families throughout their lives, and to help them transition successfully from military to civilian life.
Nonprofit Grants for Veterans
Chive Charities
Chive Charities is committed to championing those most in need, including underserved veterans and military families. Gary Sinise Foundation
The Gary Sinise Foundation serves our nation by honoring our defenders, veterans, first responders, their families, and those in need through unique programs designed to entertain, educate, inspire, strengthen, and build communities. Through this program, the foundation provides our injured, wounded, ill and/or aging heroes with the resources they need to regain their mobility and independenceensures by funding modified trucks and vans that are wheelchair accessible.
Help Our Military Heroes
Help Our Military Heroes is dedicated to serving our military heroes by funding wheelchair accessible vehicles for active duty service members and veterans who require ramp-entry, modified minivans due to their wounds, injuries, or illnesses.
