About Disability Advocates
Disability Advocates of Kent County is a nonprofit organization founded in 1981 by individuals with disabilities aiming to empower themselves and others to lead self-directed lives. Serving Kent, Mecosta, Ionia, Montcalm, and Osceola counties, the organization offers a range of services to individuals with physical, cognitive, mental, and sensory disabilities, as well as their families. Notably, 75% of their board and 56% of their staff are people living with disabilities, providing authentic insight and experience to their mission. Beyond individual support, Disability Advocates actively engages in public policy advocacy and community education to foster accessible and welcoming environments for all. Their initiatives include transit advocacy, accessibility consulting, and promoting Universal Design through programs like Absolutely Accessible Kent. Their ultimate vision is to create communities where accessibility is a standard, ensuring inclusivity for everyone, regardless of ability.
